Crohn's Disease and IBD

What is Crohn's disease?

Crohn's disease causes the inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which is called inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).IBD causes diahrrea and abdominal pain which could be severe.Sometimes inflammation causes the parts of digestive tract to swell and form deep sores called ulcers.Crohn's disease can be very pain and irritable and possibly it may lead to life-threatening conditions.

Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of Crohn's disease can range from mild to severe. They include:

The general symptoms of crohn's disease are diahrrea, ulcers and abdominal pain.Another common sign is losing weight without any unknowingly.Other uncommon symptoms include mouth sores, tears, blood in your stool, and bowel problems.

Other signs and symptoms

Severe crohn's disease may lead people to experience fever, fatigue as well as problems including arthritis, eye inflammation, skin disorders, and inflammation of the liver or bile ducts. Children with Crohn's disease may have delayed growth or sexual development.

Infections, hormonal changes, smoking, and stress can cause your symptoms to flare up.

Immediately Consult your doctor if you have some of these symptoms:

  • You feel faint or have a fast and weak pulse.
  • You have severe abdominal pain.
  • You have a high fever
  • You are vomiting again and again

Causes

Crohn's disease begins with inflammation, mostly in the lower part of the small intestine (ileum) and the upper part of large intestine.Sometimes it can also take place in the rectum, stomach, esophagus or mouth.

Doctors are not very much sure about the causes of crohn's disease but it has estimated that possibly a virus or bacterium may cause Crohn's disease. When our immune system fights against the virus, inflammation occurs in the digestive tract.
One microorganism that may be involved in the development of Crohn's is Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP).This bacterium is found in many people's blood and intestinal tissues who are affected by crohn's disease. Also some investigators believe that this disease is developed because of an abnormal immune response to bacteria that normally live in the intestine.

Genes is also responsible for this disease in many people.A person with a family history of crohn's disease is most likely to develop this disease.Smoking also puts you at a higher risk for the disease.

Tests and diagnosis
  • Blood tests. Your doctor may suggest blood tests to check for anemia — a condition in which there are not enough red blood cells to carry enough oxygen to your tissue or to check for signs of infection.
  • Colonoscopy. This test allows your doctor to view your entire colon using a thin, flexible, lighted tube with an attached camera.
  • Barium enema. This diagnostic test allows your doctor to evaluate your large intestine with an X-ray. Before the test, barium, a contrast dye, is placed into your bowel. The barium fills and coats the lining of the bowel, creating a clear view of your rectum, colon and a portion of your small intestine.

Treatment

Treatment depends on what type of symptoms you are being experienced off and how much intense are they.

Medince is the usuall treatment for crohn's disease.Mild symptoms of crohn's disease are treated by prescribing a series of medication to overcome problems like diarrhea. It also helps to contrl the inflammtion of the digestive tract and
help heal damaged tissue.

If your disease had got worse, these medicines are unlikely to control your symptoms. Then stronger treatments are done which includes passing of medicine through a vein or in most rare cases surgery is being held to remove that part of your digestive tract.

To prevent these symptoms and to feel better you may try these few steps.

Eat healthy food

Do regular exercise

Reduce sugar useage

Do not try to smoke(smoke worsens crohn's disease)

Crohn's disease makes your body unable to absorb all nutrients from food.So eat foods high in calories and high in protein, so that you get maximum number of nutients you need.

HyperTension

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is also called high blood pressure. This is a condition when the blood is pushed hardly against the walls of your arteries due to high pressure, when it moves through your body.Normally, blood rises up and down throughout the day, but if it stays up, you have high blood pressure.High blood pressure leads to the damage of blood vessels, heart and kidneys.Persistent high blood pressure takes you to the risk of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and is major cause of renal failure.
Another name given to high blood pressure is " a silent killer" because it does not show any symptoms while it is causing the damage.

Sypmtoms

Hypertension is usually found by the healthcare professionals during a routine checkup of blood pressure.Hypertension usually shows no symptoms but some people feels headaches, fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, facial flushing, insomnia or difficulty in sleeping.

Also, hypertension is often triggered with mental tension, stress and anxiety.Increasing hypertension is associated with confusion, visual disturbances, nausea and vomiting.

Causes

No exact cause is found yet but many things are known to raise blood pressure. These include:

Obesity(over weight)
Eating too much salt,
Intake of exccesive alcohol,
having a family history of high blood pressure,
genetics,
insulin resistance and
getting older

Your blood pressure may also rise if you are not very active.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the intensity of your blood pressure or whether you have any other health problem or disease such as diabetes.Doctor will also view that how likely you are to develop other diseases, especially heart disease.

Blood pressure can be lowered by making some lifestyle changes.

Weight reduction and regular aerobic exercise.

Reducing dietary sugar intake.

Reducing salt in the diet is very effective.

Additional dietary changes which is rich in fruits and vegetables and low fat or fat-free dairy foods.

Discontinuing tobacco use and alcohol consumption has been shown to lower blood pressure.

Reducing stress, for example with relaxation therapy, such as meditation and other mindbody relaxation techniques.

Medications

There are many classes of medications for treating hypertension, together called antihypertensives, hich act by lowering blood pressure.

Commonly used drugs include:

  • ACE inhibitors such as creatine captopril, enalapril, fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Zestril), quinapril, ramipril (Altace)
  • Angiotensin II receptor antagonists: eg, telmisisartan
  • Alpha blockers such as prazosin, or terazosin. Doxazosin has been shown to increase risk of heart failure.
  • Calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine amlodipine diltiazem.

Heart & Cardiovascular Disease

What is cardiovascular disease?

Cardiovascular diseases are diseases which involves heart and blood vessels.Usually, all cardiovascular diseases affect the cardiovascular system but most common of these diseases is coronary heart disease.

The heart gets its own supply of blood from a network of blood vessels on the surface of your heart, called coronary arteries.

Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is the term in which heart's blood supply is interrupted or blocked by a fatty substance which builds up in the coronary arteries. This process is known as atherosclerosis and the fatty deposits are called atheroma.Atherosclerosis causes your arteries to become narrow which stops the blood supply to heart.

This condition then turns into angina causing chest pains, which is a state before an heart attack.
And when the coronary artery becomes completely blocked, heart attack occurs.

As the age increases, the risk for coronary heart disease also increases.Older age people are more affected by this disease.

Symptoms

Chest pain (Angina) is the symptom if your coronary artery is partially blocked. If your coronary artery is completely blocked it causes heart attack as a symptom.

Coronary heart disease also cause heart palpitations.Heart palpitations occur when your heart beats irregularly, or harder than normal.

Heart failure can occur in people with coronary heart disease. The heart becomes too weak to pump blood around the body which can cause fluid to build up in the lungs, making it difficult to breath. Heart failure can happen suddenly (acute heart failure), or gradually, over a period of time (chronic heart failure).

The symptoms of angina

Angina is a symptom of coronary heart disease. It is a mild, uncomfortable feeling just like indigestion. However, a severe angina attack can cause a feeling of heaviness, or tightness, usually in the centre of the chest, which may spread to the arms, neck, jaw, back, or stomach.

The symptoms of a heart attack

The discomfort or pain of a heart attack is similar to that of angina, but it is often more severe. During a heart attack you may also experience the following symptoms:

  • sweating,
  • light-headedness,
  • nausea, and
  • breathlessness.
Causes

Your risk of developing atherosclerosis is significantly increased if you:

  • smoke,
  • have high blood pressure,
  • have a high blood cholesterol level,
  • do not take regular exercise,
  • have a thrombosis, and
  • have diabetes.

Other risk factors for developing atherosclerosis include:

  • being obese or overweight, and
  • having a family history of heart attack or angina.

For men, the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis is increased if you have a close family member who has had a heart attack, or angina.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fat that is made by the liver from the saturated fat that we eat. Cholesterol is essential for healthy cells but, if there is too much in the blood, it can lead to coronary heart disease.

High blood pressure

Hypertension (high blood pressure) puts a strain on your heart and can lead to coronary heart disease.

Thrombosis

A thrombosis is a blood clot within an artery or a vein.If a thrombosis occurs in a coronary artery, it will cause the artery to narrow, increasing your chance of having a heart attack.

Treatment

Coronary heart disease cannot be cured properly, but the development of new medicines and improvements in surgical procedures, can now be managed more effectively. With the right treatment, the symptoms of coronary heart disease can be reduced, and the functioning of the heart improved.

Medicines

Many different medicines are used to treat coronary heart disease.

Some heart medicines have side effects so it may take a while to find one that works for you. Some of the medicines that are commonly used to treat heart conditions are outlined below.

Low dose aspirin and 'clot-busting' medication
A low dose aspirin and/or a clot-busting medicine may be prescribed for you by your doctor,This type of medicine will help prevent your blood clotting, reducing your risk of heart attack and angina.

Anticoagulants

Anticoagulants, such as warfarin, are sometimes used to stop the blood clotting.

Statins

A high level of 'bad cholesterol' (LDL) in your blood, can cause a build up of atheroma in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart attack. If you have a high blood cholesterol level, cholesterol-lowering medicine, called statins, may be prescribed.

Anti-arrhythmic medicine

Anti-arrhythmic medicine is sometimes used to control the rhythm of your heart. This type of medicine is most effective when exactly the right level is in your bloodstream, so correct dosage should be taken.

Surgical procedures

If your blood vessels are very narrow due to a build up of atheroma (fatty deposits), or if your symptoms cannot be controlled using medication, surgery may be needed to open up, or replace, the blocked arteries.

Coronary artery bypass

A coronary artery bypass is a procedure that allows the blood flowing through the coronary artery to bypass the part of the artery that is blocked. This is a major operation because it involves using an artery from another region of the body.

Heart transplant

Sometimes, when the heart is severely damaged and medicine is not effective, or when the heart becomes less efficient at pumping blood around the body (heart failure) a heart transplant may be required. A heart transplant involves replacing a heart that is damaged, with a healthy donor heart.

Heartburn and GERD(Updated)

What is GERD?

GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux Disease. It occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter does not closes properly and the stomach acid contents rise up back into the esophagus with food.Esophagus is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.Lower esophageal sphincter is a muscle at the bottom of esophagus which links esophagus with stomach.

When stomach acid rises up to the mouth, a sour taste occurs and when the stomach acid touches lining of the esophagus, a buring sensation is produced in the chest and throat called heartburn.Gerd is a common disease, which if occurs twice or thrice in a week, doctor should be consulted or it can lead to more serious problems.

What are the symptoms of GERD?

The main symptom of GERD in adults is frequent heartburn, also called acid indigestion—burning-type pain in the lower part of the mid-chest, behind the breast bone, and in the mid-abdomen.Instead, they may experience a dry cough, asthma symptoms, or trouble swallowing.

What causes GERD?

factors that may contribute to GERD include
  • obesity
  • pregnancy
  • smoking

Common foods that can worsen reflux symptoms include

  • citrus fruits
  • chocolate
  • drinks with caffeine or alcohol
  • fatty and fried foods
  • garlic and onions
  • mint flavorings
  • spicy foods
  • tomato-based foods, like spaghetti sauce, salsa, chili, and pizza

How is GERD treated?

If you have had symptoms of GERD use antacids or other over-the-counter reflux medications for more than 2 weeks.

Depending on the severity of your GERD, treatment may involve one or more of the following lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery:

Lifestyle Changes

  • If you smoke, stop.
  • Avoid foods and beverages that worsen symptoms.
  • Lose weight if needed.
  • Eat small, frequent meals.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes.
  • Avoid lying down for 3 hours after a meal.
  • Raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches by securing wood blocks under the bedposts. Just using extra pillows will not help.

Medications

Your health care provider may recommend over-the-counter antacids or medications that stop acid production or help the muscles that empty your stomach.

Surgery

Surgery is an option when medicine and lifestyle changes do not help to manage GERD symptoms. Surgery may also be a reasonable alternative to a lifetime of drugs and discomfort.

New GERD Procedure

If neglected GERD can have not only unpleasant, perhaps painful symptoms, but can also generate grave complications. At worst, it may even lead to the development of esophageal cancer. By practicing some behavioral modifications we can overcome recurrent acid reflux. Lifestyle changes are all that is necessary in preventing heartburn from becoming a chronic disease.
There are a number of effective treatments available, from medications to surgery. Don’t let the problem take over. Recently approved by the FDA, a new technology called plicator procedure is being used to achieve better results without major surgery.

Migraine Headaches

What is migraine?

Migraine is a chronic type of headache. It is so much painful that if a person suffers with migraine, he/she is not able to do the daily routine work.Usually, a migraine headache is very intense and itching which pains in one side of your head.Sometimes it runs from one side of your head to the other.Migraine not only triggers pain but it can also cause nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound.Migraine headache can attack anytime of the day and some people suffers with migraine once in a week or may be year.Usually, women more suffers with migraines then men.

Causes

Till yet there are no as such real causes of migraine found. But doctors and researchers think that migraine headache is due some abnormal variations in the contents of brain. When these contents level increases, it causes inflammation in brain.Due to this inflammation the blood vessels in the brain swells, which then collides with the nearby nerves, causing a severe pain.

Genes also have been linked to migraine. People who get migraines may have abnormal genes that control the functions of certain brain cells.

Migraine tend to have attacks triggered by:

lack of or too much sleep,

skipped meals,

bright lights, loud noises, or strong odors,

stress and anxiety,

alcohol and

foods that contain spices

How to treat migraines?

They can't be treated permanently but usually migraine attack is being managed.Firstly you can try pain medicines such as ibuprofen or naproxen. If it does not work then maybe your doctor will prescribe more stronger medicines which stops the migraine as it triggers.Always carry your migraine medicine with you in case of an attack. For people with extreme migraine pain, a powerful “rescue” drug might be prescribed, too.Because not everyone responds the same way to migraine drugs, you will need to work with your doctor to find the treatment that works best for you.

Lifestyle changes. Practicing these habits can reduce the number of migraine attacks:

  • Avoid or limit triggers.
  • Get up and go to bed the same time every day.
  • Eat healthy foods and do not skip meals.
  • Engage in regular physical activity.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine intake.
  • Learn ways to reduce and cope with stress.

You may not be able to use medicines in pregnancy state or people with heart diseases and high blood pressure.

First Aid

What is first aid?

First aid is the health care stock which is to be kept in home for the medical purposes. The main advantage of a first aid kit is that we can handle an emergency at the moment, instead of waiting for the things to come and then we make use of them.Usually a neutral person uses the first aid kit for the patient.First aid kit could be used in cases such as sudden illness, burns, cuts, head injuries, eye injuries, foot injuries, hand and wrist injuries or any situation involving medical support.

First aid kit generally consists of a series of simple and life-saving techniques.A first aid kit should include the following material:

First-aid manual
Bandages with different sizes
Medicines
sterile gauze
thermometer
adhesive tape
antiseptic wipes
antiseptic solution
antibiotic cream
extra prescription medications (if the family is going on vacation)
sharp scissors
tweezers
Spirit or ethyl alcohol
plastic gloves (at least 2 pairs)
flashlight
emergency phone numbers

You should choose a type of container for your first aid kit which is normal size, reliable, easy handling, durable and simple to open.Plastic boxes are ideal for first aid kits because they are lightweight, with handles to hold them and have enough space to adjust all equipments.

Atleast one first aid kit should be available in every home.

Influenza

What is influenza?

Influenza is a disease which involves respiratory problems caused by the influenza viruses.Commonly in short form, influenza is also called 'flu'.Flu can cause mild as well as severe illness and sometimes conditions become so fatal that death occurs.Flu vaccination is one of the best way to keep away from flu illness and it should be done yearly.Young people, old agers, and unhealthy people are more likely at a risk for serious flu conditions.

Symptoms of Flu

symptoms of flu includes:

1. Runny nose
2. Dry Cough
3. Fever
4. Sore Throat
5.Tiredness
6.Headaches
7.Stomach problems such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting

Also severe symptoms of flu include: Bacterial pneumonia, Dehydration, different Infections and triggering of chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Heart attack or Asthama.

Spreading of Flu

Mostly flu viruses are distributed from one person to another through coughing or sneezing around each others.Sometimes touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching mouth, nose or eating with those hands also causes flu.A flu infected person is most likely to spread disease from him/her to someone else.

Prevention of seasonal flu

Vaccination is a best way for preventing seasonal flu. There are two types of vaccines:

The flu shot: This is an inactivate vaccine which is injected into the body. This is suitable for people over 6 months.

The nasal-spray flu vaccine
: a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu (sometimes called LAIV for “Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine”). LAIV is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years of age.

Who Should Not Be Vaccinated

There are some people who should not be vaccinated without first consulting a physician. These include:

  • People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.
  • People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination.
  • People who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine.
  • Children less than 6 months of age
  • People who have a severe illness with a fever

Vaccine effectiveness
The ability of flu vaccine to protect a person depends on the age and health status of the person getting the vaccine, and the similarity between the virus strains in the vaccine and those in circulation. Testing has shown that both the flu shot and the nasal-spray vaccine are effective at preventing the flu.

Cholesterol

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is defined as a soft fat-like substance which is called a lipid.Cholesterol is used by our body to make new cells, hormones and to perform other bodily functions.Cholesterol is essential for our body but excessive intake of cholesterol can block our arteries which is extremely dangerous. It is a slow process but by the time it becomes a serious problem such as Coronary Heart Disease or Stroke.

Sources of cholesterol

There are two sources of cholesterol: Our body and the food we eat.

Liver is an organ which produces most of the cholesterol for our body needs and also some body cells make cholesterol.Other source of cholesterol is the food we eat such as Meat, Butter, Eggs, Cheese and Fat Full Milk.About 75% of the cholesterol we get from our body and 25% of it is consumed from the food we eat.

Cholesterol is naturally produced by our body but some people inherit genes from their mother, father or possibly grandparents which causes them to make too much.Eating saturated fat, trans fats and dietary cholesterol also increases how much you have.

Types of Cholesterol

Cholesterol cannot be dissolved in the blood, so it has to be transported to and from the cells via substances called lipoproteins.

Cholesterol is of two types: 1. LDL (BAD)
2. HDL (GOOD)

One is a bad cholesterol and the other is good one.

LDL (Bad) Cholesterol: If too much of this cholesterol is circulating in the blood, it starts to build up in the inner walls of the arteries that links to the heart and brain.By the time it form a thick and hard deposit that narrow the arteries and makes them less flexible. This type of condition is called atherosclerosis. If the artery is completly blocked a Heart Attack or Stroke can occur.

HDL (good) Cholesterol: HDl is also called High Density Lipoprotein and it is a good cholesterol. It is called good cholesterol because high densities of this cholesterol protect against heart attack and also low densities of HDL increases the risk of heart attack.HDL is said to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, which is passed from the body.

Prevention and treatments:

To reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, work with your healthcare professionals to monitor and maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
Take responsibility for managing your cholesterol levels. Whether you've been prescribed medication or advised to make diet and lifestyle changes to help manage your cholesterol, carefully follow your doctor's recommendations.

Lifestyle Changes

Your diet, weight, physical activity and exposure to tobacco smoke all affect your cholesterol level — and these factors may be controlled by:

  • eating a heart-healthy diet
  • enjoying regular physical activity , and
  • Avoiding tobacco smoke

Drug therapy for cholesterol

For some people, lifestyle changes alone aren't enough to reach healthy cholesterol levels. Your doctor may prescribe medication. Learn about:

  • Types of cholesterol-lowering drugs
  • Tips for taking medications

Body Image

What is body image?

Body image is the pysical apperance of a human body and it is the factor which makes human body attractive or unattractive.Body image is an internal sense in us, produced by our brain which make us feel good or sometimes bad.Mostly, people see themselves particularly different then they actually appear to others.Although, some body images are naturally very attractive compared to others.

Features
Attractiveness in one's body image makes him feel good or may be proud. While, negative feelings towards a person's body can lead to mental disorders such as depression or eating disorders.Body image is often measured by rating the looks and ideal body shape.Fatty body is usually considered as a poor body image thats why people are curious to lose weight.

Women body and men body differs from each other. However, men body is much more attarctive then women.Fat women are always curious to lose weight because fatiness makes their body image unattractive.A slim and smart women is compared to be attractive than a fat one.The main feature of a woman's body is her figure, if it is preferable then no can call her unattractive.
Whereas men are interested in developing a muscular body shape instead of becoming slim.A muscular body for men is the most suitable choice beacause it makes a man look attractive, healthy and powerfull.Muscle dissatisfaction has been linked to low self esteem, personality disorder and is related to the use of muscle-building supplements and steroids.

Slim body shape in man can also be prefered but it depends on the intensity of slimness.

Tips for better body image:

Best way for an attractive body image is regular exercise.

Take a healthy and balanced diet on daily basis.

Practice sports on a regular basis.

Be active instead of being dull.

Avoid health injurous habits like smoking.

Join a Health club or Gym if possible.

Bipolar Disorder

Description

Bipolar disorder describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated moodreferred to as mania or, if milder, hypomania.Individuals who experience manic episodes commonly experience depressive episodes or symptoms,in which features of both mania and depression are present at the same time. These episodes are normally separated by periods of normal mood.Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead to psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations.

Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms of the depressive phase of bipolar disorder include: persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, guilt, anger, hopelessness, disturbances in sleep, fatigue and loss of interest in usuall activities, problems concentrating, loneliness, indifference, depersonalization, shyness or social anxiety, irritability, chronic pain , lack of motivation, and suicidal ideation.

Manic episode

Mania is generally characterized by a distinct period of an irritable mood state.Attention span is low and a person in a manic state may be easily distracted.Judgment may become impaired. They may indulge in substance abuse, particularly alcohol or other depressants, cocaine or other stimulants, or sleeping pills.Their behavior may become aggressive or intrusive.A person in a manic state can begin to experience psychosis, or a break with reality, where thinking is affected along with mood.

Hypomanic episode

Hypomania is less extreme state than mania, and people in the hypomanic phase generally experience fewer symptoms of mania than those in a full-blown manic episode. One might feel an uncontrollable impulse to laugh at things. This is often a very "artistic" state of the disorder, in which a flight of ideas, extremely clever thinking, and an increase in energy can occur.

Causes

Bipolar disorder is not either environmental or physiological that is, many genes and environmental factors combine to create the disorder. Since bipolar disorder is so heterogeneous, bipolar disorder tends to run in families.More than two-thirds of people with bipolar disorder have at least one close relative with the disorder.

When faced with a very stressful, negative major life event, such as a failure in an important area, an individual may have his first major depression. When an individual accomplishes a major achievement he may experience his first hypomanic or manic episode. Individuals with bipolar disorder tend to experience episode triggers involving either interpersonal or achievement-related life events. An example of interpersonal-life events include falling in love or, conversely, the death of a close friend.

Treatment

Bipolar disorder cannot be cured; instead, the emphasis of treatment is on effective management of acute episodes and prevention of further episodes.Hospitalization may occur, especially with manic episodes. This can be voluntary or involuntary Following a hospital admission, support services available can include drop-in centers, visits from members of a community mental health team or Assertive Community Treatment team, supported employment and patient-led support groups. The mainstay of treatment is a mood stabilizer medication which have been shown to be effective in preventing relapses of manic, or depressive episodes.

The first known mood stabilizer is lithium, originally used as an anticonvulsant.Other anticonvulsants used in bipolar disorder include carbamazepine, reportedly more effective in rapid cycling bipolar disorder, and lamotrigine, which is the first anticonvulsant shown to be of benefit in bipolar depression.

Arthritis

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a disease which causes damage to the joints of the body.Arthritis is a general cause to the disability of people older than fifty five years.Arthritis exists in different forms, with different causes. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. It may be caused by a severe accident, infection of the joints or older age.Other arthritis forms are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks itself.More forms of arthritis are Septic arthritis, caused by joint infection.Secondly Gouty arthritis, caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint.

Symptoms

Symptoms are pattern of joint involvement, early morning stiffness, tenderness, gelling or locking with inactivity, aggravating and relieving factors, and other systemic symptoms.Physical examination may confirm or indicate systemic disease.

Treatment

Treatment basically depends on the specific form of arthritis.Mostly treatments include physical and occupational therapy, lifestyle changes (including exercise and weight control), medications and dietary supplements(targeting on the type of arthritis). Arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) may be required in eroding forms of arthritis.

Infact, physical exercising of the affected joint can improve the conditions in terms of long-term pain relief.Another form of non-drug treatment to support the disease is marine oil, from fish. Diets high in marine oils from cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna reduces the inflammation of joint conditions such as arthritis. Massage on joints with neem oil has reported improvement in chronic and acute cases

Back pain

Back pain is pain felt in the back that usually generates from muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine.

The pain may occur suddenly or can be a chronic pain which stay in one place or radiate to other areas. pains include dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may be felt in the neck (and might radiate into the arm and hand), in the upper back, or in the low back, (and might radiate into the leg or foot), and may include symptoms like weakness, numbness or tingling.

Back pain is one of humanity's most frequent complaints. The spine is a complex interconnecting network of nerves, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and all are capable of producing pain. Large nerves that originate in the spine and go to the legs and arms can make pain radiate to the extremities.

Associated conditions

Back pain can be a sign of a serious medical problem, although this is not most frequently the underlying cause:

-Typical warning signs of a potentially life-threatening problem are bowel and bladder incontinence or progressive weakness in the legs.

-Severe back pain that occurs with other signs of severe illness (e.g. fever, unexplained weight loss)

-Back pain that occurs after a trauma, such as a car accident or a fall.

-Back pain in individuals with a history of cancer (especially cancers known to spread to the spine like breast, lung and prostate cancer) .

Underlying causes

Muscle strains (pulled muscles) are commonly identified as the cause of back pain, as are muscle imbalances. Pain from such an injury often remains as long as the muscle imbalances persist. The muscle imbalances cause a mechanical problem with the skeleton, building up pressure at points along the spine, which causes the pain.Relief should be felt with flexion (bending forward),and exacerbated with extension (bending backward).

When back pain lasts more than three months, or if there is more radicular pain (sciatica) than back pain, a more specific diagnosis can usually be made. There are several common causes of back pain: for adults under age 50, these include spinal disc herniation and degenerative disc disease or isthmic spondylolisthesis; in adults over age 50, common causes also include osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) and spinal stenosis, trauma, cancer, infection, fractures, and inflammatory disease.

Treatment

The management goals when treating back pain are to achieve maximal reduction in pain intensity as rapidly as possible; to restore the individual's ability to function in everyday activities; to help the patient cope with residual pain; to assess for side-effects of therapy; and to facilitate the patient's passage through the legal and socioeconomic impediments to recovery. For many, the goal is to keep the pain to a manageable level to progress with rehabilitation, which then can lead to long term pain relief. Also, for some people the goal is to use non-surgical therapies to manage the pain and avoid major surgery, while for others surgery may be the quickest way to feel better.

Not all treatments work for all conditions or for all individuals with the same condition, and many find that they need to try several treatment options to determine what works best for them.

Allergy

Allergy is a disorder of the immune system also known as atopy. Allergic reactions are acquired, predictable and rapid that occur to environmental substances known as allergens.Allergy consists of four forms of hypersensitivity.Type 1 or immediate hypersensitivity is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils, a type of antibody known as IgE, which causes an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma, food allergies, and reactions to the poison of stinging insects such as wasps and bees.

The human population mostly suffers with mild allergies like hay fever and results in symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis, itchiness, and runny nose. Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe allergiesmay result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions and potentially death.

A variety of tests now exist to diagnose allergic conditions; these include testing the skin for responses to known allergens or analyzing the blood for the presence and levels of allergen-specific IgE.

Signs and symptoms

common symptoms of allergies

Nose: Swelling of the nasal mucosa (allergic rhinitis).

Sinuses: Allergic sinusitis.

Eyes: Redness and itching of the conjunctiva (allergic conjunctivitis).

Airways: Sneezing, coughing, bronchoconstriction, wheezing and
dyspnea, sometimes outright attacks of asthma, in severe cases
the airway constricts due to swelling known as angioedema.

Ear: Feeling of fullness, possibly pain and impaired hearing due to the
lack of eustachian tube drainage.

Skin: Rashes, such as eczema and hives (urticaria)

Gastrointestinal tract: Abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, Diarrhea

Cause:

Risk factors for allergy can be placed in two general categories, namely host and environmental factors. Host factors include heredity, sex, race, and age, with heredity being by far the most significant. There have been recent increases in the incidence of allergic disorders, however, that cannot be explained by genetic factors alone. The four main environmental candidates are alterations in exposure to infectious diseases during early childhood, environmental pollution, allergen levels, and dietary changes.

Treatment

There have been enormous improvements in the medical treatments used to treat allergic conditions. With respect to anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects and in allergic skin diseases, advances have included the identification of food proteins to which IgE binding is associated with severe reactions and development of low-allergen foods, improvements in skin prick test predictions; evaluation of the atopy patch test; in wasp sting outcomes predictions and a rapidly disintegrating epinephrine tablet, and anti-IL-5 for eosinophilic diseases.

Traditionally treatment and management of allergies involved simply avoiding the allergen in question or otherwise reducing exposure. For instance, people with cat allergies were encouraged to avoid them. While avoidance may help to reduce symptoms and avoid life-threatening anaphylaxis, it is difficult to achieve for those with pollen or similar air-borne allergies. Strict avoidance still has a role in management though, and is often used in managing food allergies.

Pain management

Pain management is the medical discipline concerned with the relief of pain.

Types of pain

Acute pain is such a pain that results from trauma.Usually it has a reversible cause and to overcome it only transient measures and correction of the underlying problem is needed. Besides it, chronic pain is another pain that difficult to diagnose and treat which may take a long time to recover. Some examples include cancer, neuropathy, and referred pain. Sometimes, pain pathways (nociceptors) are made that continue to transmit the sensation of pain even though the injury that originally caused pain has been healed. In such situations, the pain itself is frequently managed separately from the cause of that symptom. In other words the goal of treatment is to manage the pain with no treatment of any underlying condition (e.g. if the underlying condition has resolved or if no identifiable source of the pain can be found).

Trauma:Physical trauma refers to a physical injury. A trauma patient is someone who has suffered serious and life-threatening physical injury resulting in secondary complications such as shock, respiratory failure and death.

Methods

Pain management generally benefits from a multidisciplinary approach that includes pharmacologic measures (analgesics such as narcotics and pain modifiers such as tricyclic antidepressants or anticonvulsants), non-pharmacologic measures (such as interventional procedures, physical therapy and physical exercise, application of ice and heat), and psychological measures (such as biofeedback and cognitive therapy). The World Health Organization (WHO) introduced a pain ladder for managing analgesia which was first described for usage in cancer pain, but can be used by medical professionals as a general principle when dealing with analgesia for any type of pain.

Medical specialties

Pain management experts come from all fields of medicine.Mostly, pain management physicians are anesthesiologists, neurologists, physiatrists or psychiatrists. Some experts are more preferable for the pharmacologic management of the patient, while others prefer the interventional management of pain.Interventional procedures - typically used for chronic back pain - include: epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, neurolytic blocks, Spinal Cord Stimulators and intrathecal drug delivery system implants, etc.The number of interventional procedures done for pain has grown to a very large number since several years.

Unfortunately, many of these experts are not board certified or are certified by unrecognized boards. Patients should look for practitioners that have completed an ACGME approved fellowship and are board certified by either the ABA, ABPMR or the ABPN.

Asthma

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic disease with respect to the respiratory system in which the airways occasionally constrict, become inflamed, and are lined with excessive amounts of mucus. These conditions may occur by things such as exposure to an environmental stimulant like an allergen, environmental tobacco smoke, cold or warm air, perfume, moist air, exercise or exertion, or emotional stress. In children, asthma attack is triggered are viral illnesses such as the common cold. The narrowing of airways causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. The airway constriction responds to bronchodilators.

The symptoms of asthma, which can occur from mild to life threatening, can be controlled with a combination of drugs and environmental changes.

Signs and symptoms

In some individuals asthma is characterized by chronic respiratory impairment. In others this ilness is marked by symptoms that may result in a number of triggering events, including upper respiratory infection, stress, airborne allergens, air pollutants (such as smoke or traffic fumes), or exercise.

Other symptoms of asthma includes:Dyspnea, wheezing, stridor, coughing, a tightness and itching of the chest an inability for physical exertion.

some patients present primarily with coughing, and in the late stages of an attack, air motion may be so impaired that no wheezing may be heard. When present the cough may sometimes produce clear sputum. The onset may be sudden, with a sense of constriction in the chest, breathing becomes difficult, and wheezing occurs.

Cause

Asthma is caused by a complex interaction of environmental and genetic factors that researchers do not yet fully understand.[6] These factors can also influence how severe a person’s asthma is and how well they respond to medication.[7] As with other complex diseases, many environmental and genetic factors have been suggested as causes of asthma, but not all of them have been replicated. In addition, as researchers detangle the complex causes of asthma, it is becoming more evident that certain environmental and genetic factors may only affect asthma when combined.

Prevention

Current treatment protocols recommend prevention medications such as an inhaled corticosteroid, which helps to suppress inflammation and reduces the swelling of the lining of the airways, in anyone who has frequent need of relievers or who has severe symptoms. If symptoms persist, additional preventive drugs are added until the asthma is controlled. With the proper use of prevention drugs, asthmatics can avoid the complications that result from overuse of relief medications.

Asthmatics sometimes stop taking their preventive medication when they feel fine and have no problems breathing. This often results in further attacks, and no long-term improvement.

Preventive agents include the following:

* Inhaled glucocorticoids are the most widely used prevention medications and normally come as inhaler devices (ciclesonide, beclomethasone, budesonide, flunisolide, fluticasone, mometasone, and triamcinolone).

# Leukotriene modifiers (montelukast, zafirlukast, pranlukast, and zileuton) provide anti-inflammatory effect similar to inhaled corticosteroids.

# Mast cell stabilizers (cromoglicate (cromolyn), and nedocromil).

# Antimuscarinics/anticholinergics (ipratropium, oxitropium, and tiotropium), which have a mixed reliever and preventer effect. These are often used to reduce bronchospasm when inhaled steroids do not produce sufficient relief.

# Antihistamines, often used to treat allergic effects that may underlie the chronic inflammation.

# Antihistamines, often used to treat allergic effects that may underlie the chronic inflammation.

# Hyposensitization, (also known as immunodesensitisation therapy) may be recommended in some cases where allergy is the suspected caus
Methotrexate is occasionally used in some difficult-to-treat patients.

ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder affecting about 2-5% of the world's population depending on the diagnostic criteria used.It usually occurs during childhood, and is recognized by a chronic pattern of impulsiveness , hyperactivity, and inattention.ADHD is generally a chronic disorder in individuals which is usually diagnosed in childhood continuing to meet diagnostic criteria in adulthood.

ADHD has a strong genetic component. Methods of treatment include some combination of medications, behavior modifications, life style changes, and counseling. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that stimulant medications and behavior therapy are suitable and safe treatments for ADHD.Long term safety of stimulants however has not been found.

Classification

ADHD is usually classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM).ADHD has been classified as a developmental disorder, a behavior disorder and a neurological disorder.

Symptoms:

The most common symptoms of ADHD are:

* Impulsiveness: a person who acts quickly without thinking things through.
* Hyperactivity: a person who is unable to sit still.
* Inattention: a person who daydreams or seems to be in another world.

Hyperactivity is common among children with ADHD but may be it disappears during adulthood. However, over half of children with ADHD proceed to have symptoms of inattention throughout their lives.

Not only inattention and "hyperactive" behavior are the problems faced by children suffering with ADHD. ADHD exists alone in only about 1/3 of the children diagnosed with it. Many of these similar type of conditions require other courses of treatment and some of the associated conditions are:

Bipolar disorder: Approximately, 25% of children with ADHD have bipolar disorder. Children with this combination of ADHD may demonstrate more aggression and behavioral problems.

Primary disorder of vigilance: This type of disorder is recognized if the childern show poor attention and concentration, as well as difficulty in remaining awake. These children tend to fidget, yawn and stretch, and are likely to be hyperactive in order to remain alert and active.

Oppositional defiant disorder (35%) and Conduct disorder (26%): These are both characterized by anti-social behaviors such as aggression, frequent temper tantrums, deceitfulness, lying, or stealing.

More of the following symptoms of inattention that is disruptive and inappropriate for developmental level:

1. Often does not give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities.
2. Often has trouble keeping attention on tasks or play activities.
3. Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly.
4. Often does not follow instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions).
5. Often has trouble organizing activities.
6. Often avoids, dislikes, or doesn't want to do things that take a lot of mental effort for a long period of time (such as schoolwork or homework).
7. Often loses things needed for tasks and activities (e.g. toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools).
8. Is often easily distracted.
9. Often forgetful in daily activities.

The following symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivitythat is disruptive and inappropriate for developmental level:

* Hyperactivity:

1. Often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat.
2. Often gets up from seat when remaining in seat is expected.
3. Often runs about or climbs when and where it is not appropriate (adolescents or adults may feel very restless).
4. Often has trouble playing or enjoying leisure activities quietly.
5. Is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor".
6. Often talks excessively.

* Impulsiveness:

1. Often blurts out answers before questions have been finished.
2. Often has trouble waiting one's turn.
3. Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games).

Causes

ADHD is generally inherited disease, but other causes of ADHD includes difficulties with pregnancy, birth, early childhood severe illness, and environmental toxins.

Treatment

Methods of treatment involve some combination of medications, behaviour modifications, life style changes, and counselling. The most effective and cost efficient method of treating ADHD are stimulant medications.Comorbid disorders or substance abuse can make the diagnosis and the treatment of ADHD more difficult. Psychosocial therapy is useful in treating some comorbid conditions.

However,These are the short term treatments for ADHD, long term treatments has not yet been determined with no controlled trials assessing the harms or benefits of treatment.

Anti Aging

Anti-aging addresses how to prevent, slow, or reverse the effects of genetic and help people live longer, healthier, happier lives. It includes scientific research and applications in genetic engineering ,tissue engineering and other medical advances, e.g., finding treatments and cures for Alzheimer’s disease. It includes anti-aging psychology, e.g., coping skills for resiliently handling change, stress, and aging.

The anti-aging marketplace includes nutrition, physical fitness, skin care, hormone replacements, vitamins, supplements, and herbs. Alternative medicine and holistic approaches have often been an incubator for approaches initially shunned by traditional medicine.Life extension is arguably the most scientifically rigorous part of anti-aging, being a research program focused on slowing down, repairing or reversing the underlying processes of biological senescene in order to deliver improved health and quality of life. (Despite the name, increasing mean or maximum lifespan is not necessarily the main goal).

Anti-aging pursuits date back at least to ancient Egypt. While the religion and pyramids focused on the afterlife, a lot of attention was given to herbs and remedies such as olive leaf to promote beauty and longevity. Over the centuries scientists and alchemists tried to find cures and potions. These included drinking, eating, or injecting substances such as gold, testicles, and transplanting monkey gonads. Many cultures such as India and China developed long traditions of herbs, foods, diets, and health practices to foster anti-aging.

Cancer

Cancer (medical term: malignant neoplasm) is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits), invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood). These three malignant properties of cancers differentiate them from benign tumors, which are self-limited, do not invade or metastasize. Most cancers form a tumor but some, like leukemia, do not. The branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer is oncology.

Cancer may affect people at all ages, even fetuses, but the risk for most varieties increases with age.[1] Cancer causes about 13% of all deaths.[2] According to the American Cancer Society, 7.6 million people died from cancer in the world during 2007.[3] Cancers can affect all animals.

Nearly all cancers are caused by abnormalities in the genetic material of the transformed cells. These abnormalities may be due to the effects of carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents. Other cancer-promoting genetic abnormalities may be randomly acquired through errors in DNA replication, or are inherited, and thus present in all cells from birth.

Genetic abnormalities found in cancer typically affect two general classes of genes. Cancer-promoting oncogenes are typically activated in cancer cells, giving those cells new properties, such as hyperactive growth and division, protection against programmed cell death, loss of respect for normal tissue boundaries, and the ability to become established in diverse tissue environments. Tumor suppressor genes are then inactivated in cancer cells, resulting in the loss of normal functions in those cells, such as accurate DNA replication, control over the cell cycle, orientation and adhesion within tissues, and interaction with protective cells of the immune system.

Signs and symptoms

Roughly, cancer symptoms can be divided into three groups:

Every symptom in the above list can be caused by a variety of conditions (a list of which is referred to as the differential diagnosis). Cancer may be a common or uncommon cause of each item.

Treatment

Cancer can be treated by surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy or other methods. The choice of therapy depends upon the location and grade of the tumor and the stage of the disease, as well as the general state of the patient (performance status). A number of experimental cancer treatments are also under development.

Complete removal of the cancer without damage to the rest of the body is the goal of treatment. Sometimes this can be accomplished by surgery, but the propensity of cancers to invade adjacent tissue or to spread to distant sites by microscopic metastasis often limits its effectiveness. The effectiveness of chemotherapy is often limited by toxicity to other tissues in the body. Radiation can also cause damage to normal tissue.

Because "cancer" refers to a class of diseases, it is unlikely that there will ever be a single "cure for cancer" any more than there will be a single treatment for all infectious diseases.

Tissue can be organized in a continuous spectrum from normal to cancer.

Tissue can be organized in a continuous spectrum from normal to cancer.

Symptom control

Although the control of the symptoms of cancer is not typically thought of as a treatment directe

d at the cancer, it is an important determinant of the quality of life of cancer patients, and plays an important role in the decision whether the patient is able to undergo other treatments. Although doctors generally have the therapeutic skills to reduce pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hemorrhage and other common problems in cancer patients, the multidisciplinary specialty of palliative care has arisen specifically in response to the symptom control needs of this group of p

atients.

Pain medication, such as morphine and oxycodone, and antiemetics, drugs to suppress nausea and vomiting, are very commonly used in patients with cancer-related symptoms. Improved antiemetics such as ondansetron and analogues, as well as aprepitant have made aggressive treatments much more feasible in cancer patients.

HIV & AIDS

What is HIV?

The Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) is a sexually transmitted virus that attacks the body's immune system, which gives a natural protection against diseases and infections.HIV infects special cells, called CD4 cells, which are found in blood, and they fight against infection. If the human body stops to produce these cells, the immune system stop working. This can develop a serious infection or disease like Cancer in our body.

What is AIDS?

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a term that is used to describe the latter stages of HIV, when the immune system does not work and a life-threatening condition is developed, such as pneumonia (infection of the lungs). The term 'AIDS' was first used when the exact nature of the HIV virus was not fully understood. This term is too general to describe the many different conditions that can affect a body with HIV.

Symptoms of primary HIV infection may include(2-6 weeks after HIV attack):fever, joint pain, muscle pain, sore throat, tiredness, swollen glands, ora blotchy rash on the chest. If it is left untreated then it can change into a serious and dangerous condition when our immune system stops working.

Symptoms of a serious infection caused by a damaged immune system are:
a fever of above 100F that lasts a few weeks,

swollen glands that last for more than a couple of months,

unexplained weigh loss,

blurred vision,

night sweats,

white spots on your tongue or mouth,

dry cough,

shortness of breath,

persistent tiredness and

Diarrhoea.

How HIV spreads inside the body:

The HIV virus breaks down the genetic code of cells specially CD4 cells used by our immune system, and then uses the raw genetic material to replicate itself. The body can make more CD4 cells, but eventually the HIV virus will reduce the numbers of CD4 cells to such an extent that the immune system will stop working.

How HIV spreads outside the body:

-HIV can be spread through blood transfusions

-People who inject illegal drugs, and share needles, are also at risk from getting the HIV virus. The condition can also be spread from a mother to her unborn child.

-.HIV virus can be spread through the exchange of bodily fluids, such as semen or blood like sexual intercourse.

Treatment:

As part of your treatment, you will undergo regular blood tests. The tests are used to measure two things:your CD4 count - which is the number of CD4 cells in your blood, andviral load - which is the amount of HIV in your bloodThe implications of different CD4 counts are explained below.A CD4 count of 500, or above, means that there is no risk of infection.A CD4 count of between 200 and 500, means that there is a small risk of infection, particularly from tuberculosis (TB).A CD4 count of less than 200 means that there is high risk of serious infection. The viral load will be regularly measured in order to show whether the medicines that are being used to treat HIV are working effectively. A high viral load may mean that you need a new combination of medicines.

Both the CD4 count and viral load can fluctuate over time, so one high, or low, reading does not automatically mean that your condition has got worse. The general trend of your CD4 count and viral load, over time, is more important in tracking the progression of the condition.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)There is no cure, or vaccine, for HIV, and researchers think it will take many years to find it. However, special medicines such as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has shown remarkable success in slowing the progression of the condition, and prolonging life.

Addiction

This article is about the concept of addiction. The term addiction is used in many concepts such as to describe compulsion, physical dependence or obsession such as drug addiction, compulsive overeating, alcoholism, computer addiction etc.
Medical terminology states that addiction is a state which makes the body to rely on a particular substance for the normal functioning and develops physical dependence for example, Drug addiction. When a drug dependent person is suddenly removed from that substance, it will cause withdrawal, a series of signs and symptoms.Addiction is generally associated with increase drug tolerance. In physiological terms, addiction is not necessarily associated with substance abuse infact this form of addiction can result from using medication as prescribed by a doctor.
One more form of addiction is nicotine addiction which is generated by smoking cigarattes. This addiction is called The Mother of Devil because usually after starting this other addictions are came to known.

However, the term addiction is commonly used to describe physical dependence. The term addiction is also sometimes applied to compulsions that are not substance-related, such as problem gambling and computer addiction. In these kinds of common usuages, the term addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individual's health, mental state or social life.

Addiction is a primary, progressive, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over use of the substance, preoccupation with the substance, use of the substance despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking.

Methods of care:

The American Society of Addiction Medicine recommends treatment for people with chemical dependency based on patient placement criteria (currently listed in PPC-2), which attempt to match levels of care according to clinical assessments in six areas, including:
  • Acute intoxication and/or withdrawal potential
  • Biomedical conditions or complications
  • Emotional/behavioral conditions or complications
  • Treatment acceptance/resistance
  • Relapse potential
  • Recovery environment
While addiction or dependency is related to seemingly uncontrollable urges, and arguably could have roots in genetic predispositions, treatment of dependency is conducted by a wide range of medical and allied professionals, including Addiction Medicine specialists, psychiatrists, and appropriately trained nurses, social workers, and counselors. Early treatment of acute withdrawal often includes medical detoxification, which can include doses of anxiolytics or narcotics to reduce symptoms of withdrawal. An experimental drug, ibogaine, is also proposed to treat withdrawal and craving. Alternatives to medical detoxification include acupuncture detoxification. In chronic opiate addiction, a surrogate drug such as methadone is sometimes offered as a form of opiate replacement therapy. But treatment approaches universal focus on the individual's ultimate choice to pursue an alternate course of action.

Aerobics

Aerobics refers to the type of physical exercise that involves aerobic routines, which refers to exercise that involves or improves oxygen consumption by the body, by the application of rhythmical movements. In particular, it defines the concepts of: Flexibility, which is the amount of movement in a joint or muscle that is attainable with the help of a partner or the use of a certain piece of equipment.

Usually aerobics are performed with playing music at the background and in a group setting. An instructor is there for the guidance to the performers.Aerobics can also be performed without music and with group setting but it is said that it more benefitial to perform in a group setting.

Aerobics are intended to perform for physical fitness and also to prevent or in a sense to reduce certain illness. The guided actions to the participants includes a series of many dance-like excercises which are performed, infact participants enjoy performing it.In order to achieve the best results from the participants, aerobics are performed at different levels of intensity and complexity depending upon the abilities and physical fitness of the performers

Many gyms or fitness centers offers aerobic classes at some cost and well trains the participants to perform aerobics. Each class is taught by a certified instructor who accomodates a certain level of experience to the performers.

Aerobic gymnastics

Aerobic gymnastics, also known as sport aerobics or competitive aerobics, refers to performing complicated and high activity movements to music, which originate from traditional aerobics, with a high level of perfectly executed movements which are defined as difficult.

It combines aerobics, sports aerobics, coordinating gymnastics with music, dance movements and choreography of the entire performance. In order to introduce fairness, the performances are structured under various categories according to the age, gender and composition of the group, whether individual, mixed pairs or trios.

The performances are judged on the basis of the quality of the artistic content, the creativity exhibited, how well the performance was executed, and the extent of the difficulty of the routines presented.

Emotional Health Techniques

Emotional health is a state of wellness that comes from understanding and acknowledging our emotions and finding appropriate ways to express them. As employees, we often bring emotional problems from our childhood or current family life into the workplace because we haven’t dealt with them effectively outside of work. This can seriously damage workplace relationships and lead to poor performance and negative feelings all around.

Corporate wellness programs usually have professional support already in place as part of their services.

1. Coaching/Counseling:
One of the hallmarks of emotional health is the willingness to ask for help when we need it. Confidential professional help, the coaching and counseling provided by employee assistance or wellness programs, can provide an external source of strength and insight for “working out” emotionally-based problems instead of “working them in” to your job.

2. Self-help Groups:
Self-help groups are designed to aid people in emotional situations in which they feel alone. The purpose of these groups is twofold: to allow people to safely feel and express their emotions, and to help break their isolation at work and/or in society at large and reintegrate them into society with the support of a peer group.

3. Journaling: Journaling is often recommended by counsellors as a way to help identify and process emotions. People record their emotions in writing as they experience them, in whatever form they wish. By helping the writer gain greater emotional clarity, journaling can help in making more emotionally informed decisions. In much the same way, letter writing enables people to identify and process the emotions they feel in relation to others. The letter does not have to be sent or its contents shared: it simply provides a place for the expression of feelings

4. Assess Your Emotional Health: Companies that seek to boost employees’ interpersonal skills, or emotional intelligence in the workplace are more successful, according to ground-breaking journalist Daniel Goleman. And emotional intelligence is the buzzword in workplaces these days. Some workplace wellness programs have information about emotional intelligence, or emotional health assessments. Seek out more information about emotional intelligence for better corporate wellness.

5. Friendships/Support Systems: Friendships allow people to feel supported in their emotional journeys. At the same time, they give people an opportunity to develop their empathetic skills. These skills are also important for workplace health. When we are empathic with fellow employees, we help them resolve negative or unhealthy emotions. New friendships are made through hobbies, classes, clubs, or even through online groups. Many people are finding emotional satisfaction by connecting or re-connecting with friends through Facebook and other social websites.

Fitness Equipment

Are you trying to lose your fat? Or you are trying to do something which makes you look fit and fine?
No problem!
Elliptical Trainer is an equipment which surely makes you fit and fine. There are many equipments that you may buy to become fit but they are not of worth. That is because they are focused entirely on the action of walking. You need something like which allows for a dual action workout. You will find this dual action workout in elliptical trainers.A few models of stationary bikes allows for a dual action workout, but the vast majority of them do not. There are no treadmills that provide a dual action workout, because all of them are focused entirely on the action of walking

Top benefits of Elliptical Trainers:

The first type of workout you get on the elliptical trainer is walking. You move your feet in stirrups without lifting your legs-that is why it is a called a no-impact work out. The benefits of using elliptical trainers includes being kind to your knee, hip, and ankle joints without losing the intensity of a good, physical workout.

One of the benefits of using elliptical trainers is the amount of calories burned while working out. Because the feet never leave the foot pedals, the joints aren't subject to impact. A running exercise with an elliptical trainer is comparable to jogging as far as the amount of calories burned, but without the jarring of the body joints. Elderly people and those with joint injuries will be greatly benefited by an elliptical trainer because of the very low impact on the body.

Because most elliptical trainers incorporate upper body arms, elliptical workouts tend to involve the whole body and give you an overall better workout - meaning you burn more calories in less time. This means that you're doing more work and burning more calories while feeling like you put out less effort.

Muscle Building Diet

Here we will talk about a muscle building diet that can help you put on more muscle. Most people think that the magic happens in the gym, but the fact is that your muscles won't grow unless your diet allows them to grow. Your diet is what provides the nutrients to feed those muscles as they grow and without the proper food, they're just not going to grow. Doing your hourly workout isn't enough because when you leave the gym, you have to care for those muscles the rest of the time. Inside the gym, you work hard. Outside the gym, you eat right.Let us see what exactly a muscle building diet should be.

The first thing you can start to do with your diet is eating smaller meals every 3 hrs. There are very important reasons to do this; metabolism and protein synthesis. When you're eating this often, your metabolism doesn't have a chance to rest, so you end up burning more fat. When it comes to protein synthesis, it basically means that you'll always have protein available for immediate muscle repairs. That means your muscles never go without.
A muscle building diet does not include the processed foods because they have chemicals and other things that your body doesn't need. They actually slow down the process of muscle. Use all natural food.Instead of buying packaged food, eat fresh meat and vegetables.

Lose Fat

Want To Lose Fat? Try A Weight Lifting Muscle Building Routine For Real Fat Loss Results

You should think about starting a weight lifting muscle building routine if you find yourself having a hard time achieving the results you want by doing cardio solely. You can actually increase your body's fat burning power and add muscle mass by beginning a good weight lifting program. Let's investigate why adding lean muscle mass is so important and desired.

The Importance Of Adding Lean Muscle

The desire for men wanting to add muscle mass is well known. A great looking physique with big shoulders and huge arms is sought after by most men and admired by women. On the other hand, because of the fear that it will make them look huge or bulky, most women avoid gaining muscle mass. This is absolutely not the case. Gaining lean muscle makes women look toned, sculpted, and lean. Think fitness model or athlete, rather than female bodybuilder.

When looking to gain muscle, it is possible to gain approximately one pound of muscle per week. By adding this one pound of muscle, your body will burn and extra 50 calories a day while resting because lean muscle actually burns more calories than fat does. It's a surprise to most to discover that while sleeping or resting your body actually burns calories. The number of calories you burn while resting is for the most part determined by the amount of lean muscle mass you have on your body. This can really add up over the course of a couple of months.

You'll Look And Feel Tremendous

A weight lifting muscle building routine not only makes you look fantastic, it will also increase your fat burning ability and have you feeling great!

You'll not only have enhanced strength and energy, but a more positive outlook on life and a happier mood. You'll find that this even grows over time. You'll have increased motivation and more amazing and faster results based on the amount of effort you put in.

Think about feeling great every singe day both mentally and physically! This is feasible for anyone to achieve and is the ultimate goal.

You Can Do it!

You can be on the route to a new body both physically and mentally by starting a weight lifting muscle building routine. Warm-ups are vital to any physical activity. Try some light exercise and stretching for 5 to 10 minutes that will get your heart rate up and loosen your muscles. Warm-ups will reduce the risk of injury and prepare your muscles to lift more.

Use Dumbbells
Dumbbells allow for a much better range of motion, whereas if you use a machine you're limited. With just a set of dumbbells you can workout any part of your body with several different exercises. This will save you a lot of money and time by not going out and purchasing different exercise equipment for each body part. This will also save space and give you a lot more room to workout.

Supersets
Using supersets with lifting is one of the best things to build big muscles. They set a higher tone for your workout, and will get you in and out of the gym quicker than you ever thought possible. A superset is where you perform two exercises back to back without a rest in between them. You need to rest at least 30 seconds between each superset. This will maximize your results in less time at the gym or at home.

Get Your Rest
This is essential if you want to build bigger muscle. When you are weight lifting you are tearing the fibre in your muscle tissue. Your body builds muscle during recovery, not when you are working out. You should start going to the gym three days a week, making sure you get at least 48 hours rest in between each workout.

High Intensity
You need to lift heavier weights for high intensity training. This will take your body out of its comfort zone thus becoming stronger. Make sure you are keeping your reps very low, and your workout challenging. Distance runners train with small weights and high reps because they don't want to build bigger muscle. Keep this in mind when your at the gym.

Proper Form
You not only need good form to achieve better results, but it will also prevent injury and soreness.Ask your trainer if you're doing it right. Don't second-guess yourself on this, find out before.

Don't Waste Time
Some people are on their cell phones or gossiping with friends when they should be working out. You will be much more productive and focused with your workout if you avoid these things.

Herbal Viagra – A Global Phenomenon

ViagraThe conventional form of the drug, Viagra, is designed to help with erectile dysfunction and was founded in 1998. Since then, in its first year alone Viagra’s sales topped $788 and became a house hold name the world over. However, healthy men are also taking advantage of the situation in an attempt to improve and intensify their sexual experiences. Since then, herbal equivalents have been coming out of the wood work, with origins in countries such as:

China
Africa
Lebanon
Canada
China
With a reputation for being avid fans of herbal alternatives to the usual medicinal cures, China has their own version of herbal Viagra too. However, despite predictions for their version known as “weige” to be a top seller, it never got the opportunity as the government banned all Viagra look a likes.
AfricaAcross continents, the Africans have also developed their version of the herbal Viagra. Their form is known as “vuka vuka” which stands for wake up wake up and is now rumoured to be the most used drug in the whole of Zimbabwe. Unlike conventional Viagra, vuka vuka is taken in liquid form and is supposedly stronger in effect than the real thing!

LebanonAccording to sources in Lebanon, extracts from the Hairy Root plant can be taken as herbal Viagra. Grown 6,000 feet up in the mountains, it is not the easiest to get hold of but apparently, if you can get hold of it, it can be taken in powder form mixed into tea or in capsules.

CanadaRather than Canada having their own form of herbal Viagra, it was a Canadian scientist who claimed extracts from the plant Tribulus Terrestris can help with male impotence and increase sperm mobility and strength. Tribulus is, rather than being found up a mountain, is a lot more accessible all over the world and is an herb thought to be able to help lower blood pressure

Skin Creme For Men

Is there anyone who would be willing to raise a toast to the best skin creme for men? Is there, in fact, a man who cares to acknowledge the benefits of the most effective male skin products? The search for such a gentleman might begin, as it did hundreds of years ago, with a rumor about the existence of a "fountain of youth."

When Ponce de Leon journeyed to the New World, he was not looking for the skin care. He sailed to the New World in hopes of finding the fountain of youth. Today, experts on male skin products know that attention to product labels can help a man with retention of youthful -looking skin.

A man who cares to hold-off signs of aging for the greatest amount of time does not purchase any product without first studying the product label. He looks to see whether or not a product that he has found on an actual or virtual pharmacy shelf contains dioxane.

A synthetic derivative of coconut, dioxane is absorbed through the skin. Does the absorption of dioxane then prevent the appearance of aging skin? There is no evidence that it does. There is evidence that the absorption of dioxane can lead to the development of cancer.

Those who plans to purchase best skin creme for men, avoids buying anything that contains parabens. A moisturizing product might have propyl, butyl or ethyl paraben. While a paraben can help to preserve the product, it can also cause that same product to contain a suspected carcinogen. Parabens interfere with the body's endocrine system, and their use has been linked to allergic reactions. One third group of compounds should send up a "red flag," whenever it appears on the label of a skin product. That group of compounds has a very familiar name. That group of compounds takes-in the entire family of alcohols. Why should men stay clear of products that contain alcohols? Men should avoid such products, because the alcohols used in skin care products are known to dry the skin. A man could irritate his skin by covering it with a substance that contained propyl, butyl or ethyl alcohol. None of the male skin products that contain dioxane, parabens or alcohol could qualify to be considered as the best skin creme. What then would one expect to find on the label of the best skin creme for men?
Such a creme would undoubtedly contain collagen. A fiber-like protein, collagen gives skin added strength. When skin contains an adequate amount of collagen, it feels firm to the touch. In the absence of collagen, skin can wrinkle and sag. As skin ages, skin cells loose their ability to produce collagen. That fact points to the reason the older adult often look at a wrinkled face, whenever they glance in the mirror. Yet an older man can not prevent the appearance of wrinkles by smearing on his skin a product that contains collagen. He needs to stimulate it to keep making both collagen and elastin. Like collagen, elastin is a protein. Yet elastin does not make skin stronger; it makes skin more flexible. Skin that produces a sufficient amount of elastin can return to its original position, once it has been pulled or stretched.
In summary then, a man who wants to toast effective male skin products should raise his glass to a product that can stimulate production of collagen and elastin. He should to a product that does no more than fill-in the wrinkle lines on the skin. Such a man will be rewarded with more than a refreshing beverage. He will also enjoy seeing a well-toned and youthful visage, each time that he looks in the mirror.

There are two types of diabetes: 1-"Juvenile" or "Insulin dependent" Diabetes

2-"Non-Insulin dependent" or "late oneset" Diabetes

Juvenile diabetes occurs when insulin production in our body is comletely stoped. This results in requiring an injection of insulin every day to stay in better condiotons or so called "healthy".The enzyme insulin secreted by pancrease plays the major role in ensuring that glucose level is at a safe level.

The other type of diabetes (type 2 or late onset) is not quite so severe, the body is still producing insulin but there is a problem with its production or use, but fortunately this type can be treated with a special diet.

Hair loss or baldness is in fact a condition in which hair does not grow on the scalp after hair fall. The most very common form of baldness is the development of a hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or male baldness which basically occurs in adult males.

For centuries hair loss is perceived to be male occurrence and unacceptable to happen with women. There are two basic methods of hair loss restoration: surgical and non-surgical. With the aid of modern scientific advanced knowledge hair loss now can greatly be minimized by hair loss restoration. Surgical hair loss restoration is more popular among men than woman. And it is proved and celebrated to be most effective way of restoring your hair.

For hair loss restoration hairs are taken from the back side of our head, which is a plugging - grafting procedure. The hair bunches are then grafted to the less densely populated areas of our head to give the area a fuller appearance and feel. In surgical hair loss restoration the results are gradually observed over time. In case of surgical hair loss restoration, subsequent restoration is needed. The surgical hair loss restoration treatment course is decided on the basis of requirement and desire and actual condition. Surgical hair loss restoration can give permanent solution to baldness in both men and women.

Among non-surgical hair loss restoration laser restoration is the most popular. The laser restoration is yet to be rated as best methods since the popularity of surgical method is too large in comparison to the laser technique. In the non surgical method of hair loss restoration, lasers are used to increase the follicles through chain process of increased metabolism. It improvises the productive capacity and repairs the outperforming follicles to grow more and more hair. Several lasers shots are made for this purpose all around the bald head, specially the bald areas. Some medical practitioners have observed that laser therapy for hair restoration also improvises the growth behavior of our hairs. They consider it to be best as there is nothing wounded and no scar will develop; which are common in surgical hair loss restoration process. But the re-grown hairs lasting and retention level is much higher in surgical hair loss restoration.

Apart from above most popular hair loss restoration methods, some other ways are also present including skull injection, some hormonal medication etc. For some cases the hair loss restoration process both; surgical and non-surgical methods have differing results like hair loss due to genetics or hormone.

The key to hair loss restoration is the unique combination of hair implants, laser treatments and hair growth prescribed medicines. Hair loss restoration is a great process for treating baldness and can be of great use for at least more than thirty percent of people around the world.

Yoga

Tips for Regular Yoga Practice:

As with everything in life, yoga is effective but it will only work if you 'work it'. For results with Yoga, as with any program, one needs to learn two simple rules; dedication and persistence. You have to be dedicated and follow the practices on a regular basis if you really want to get results. If you have bought some books on yoga and meditation, don't let them gather dust while you plan and hope you will start the practice one day.

Yoga postures and basic meditation exercises are simple enough to learn, even for a child. The major problem with most yoga 'drop outs' is not getting the techniques right, as most people have aligned their minds to believe, but the ability to establish the habit of following the practices through on a regular basis. The following tips may help you to do your yoga and meditation on a daily basis.

Determination: Start your yoga with a firm determination to see it through. Yoga begins and ends with the mind, if you can convince yourself you really want to do it, then you should be able to keep the spirit. The problem with most people is that they rush into everything that sounds interesting before they are sure of whether they want it or not. These people will usually dump a program before they even really begin it. Close your eyes, search deep within you, "is yoga really important to me?" Decide you will give it a fair try and stick to that determination. There are days when you feel low and won't want to do your yoga, remember your initial soul deep determination and you will always find the right spirit to go ahead.

Be organized: Things go smoothly and are more interesting when they are well organized. Make a regular schedule for your yoga practice and stick to it. The mere fact that you will always look forward to the period of your daily yoga practice will always keep it in your consciousness. You will get best results from yoga if you do your practice daily. No matter how busy you are, keep some time free during the day and reserve this time for your practice of yoga and meditation. It is better if you can get up early in the morning or late in the evening, when there will be fewer distractions.

Free your Mind: It is not enough to reserve a time for yoga if you can't put your all into the practice. When you decide to do your yoga practice and meditation, remember that the next couple of minutes have been reserved for the development of your mind and personality. It would be pointless, if your body were doing the practice while your mind were busy sorting out some other worries. Once you begin your daily yoga practice all other worries and responsibilities should be tucked somewhere else until you are through.

Add Some Color: Learning how to give and share is an important part of the personality yoga seeks to create in you. Add some color and fun into your daily yoga practice by involving your friends who would also benefit from practicing yoga. The enthusiasm of others would rub off on you any day you feel low and don't want to continue with your practice. Yoga is not what you keep to yourself - bring in one or two friends.

Learn Patience: It took you several years to build up your present personality and physical structure. You can't change it overnight. Although, with yoga you don't have to wait for that many years to change yourself because the regular and systematic practice of yoga postures and basic meditation can help you to make great changes within the shortest possible period. It's being human, sometimes you feel like you are getting results and other times, you feel like nothing is changing. You shouldn't worry so much about the short-term effects, what really matters is the ultimate goal you want to achieve. It takes a little time, but with dedication and persistence, your most profound yoga dreams will be achieved.

Yoga in Relationship with Food , Body Image , and Emotions:

Conversation is a barrier to intimacy...you can talk your way out of feeling. For individuals struggling with weight and food issues, many have learned that a diet or psychotherapist cannot solve the root these concerns—only you can look inside and discover what your soul needs to learn. For someone with an eating disorder, disordered eating, or a food addiction, the benefits of yoga can be a powerful tool to uncover your attachments and move forward with awareness.

Yoga can help delay impulses. Through a regular yoga practice, individuals may find themselves in postures that are difficult or awkward. Learning to stay within the poses and work through these postures can help an individual, who feels an urge binge or practice unhealthy food behaviors, delay acting on this urge. In our society, there is a natural tendency to want to escape anything that causes psychological or physical discomfort. People tend to escape by overeacting, working too much, getting caught up in unhealthy relationships or by drug/alcohol use. In yoga, individuals are encouraged to observe rather than react to their discomfort by breathing and listening carefully for what his/her body/mind is conveying.

Individuals begin to enjoy their body for the first time. They start to define their body in terms of “what it can do” versus “what it is.” They learn that they are not mere extensions of their body, but possess beautiful internal qualities. Yoga also emphasizes mindful eating. Individuals learn to experience the taste, texture, and other sensual qualities of food and to pay attention to what and how much they are eating. They also learn to rely on their higher wisdom and intuition to make decisions about food and daily life decisions.

Interestingly, the neurologist, Antonio Damasio, headed the team that created the Iowa gambling experiment. Dr. Damasio studied patients with damage to a small but critical part of the brain called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, which lies behind the nose. The ventromedial area plays a critical role in decision-making. People with damage to their ventromedial area are perfectly rational. They can be highly functional, but they lack judgment. Addicts can articulate very well the consequences of their behavior, but they fail to act accordingly—because of this brain issue causing the disconnect between what one “knows and what one does.” Studies have shown that meditation can act on the cerebral cortex improving awareness, focus and memory. Further studies are warranted to understand the exact mechanics of yoga and how yoga can help food addiction and related eating behaviors involving these intricate brain centers.
